Chapter Nine

Maybe Addy was right and Murphy had been placed in the kitchen. The bread was okay, soft enough that he could chew it, and he stoically choked down the beans and hash. Another day or two and he’d be back to normal. He only hoped he had it.

Sleeping had been nearly impossible, knowing she was incarcerated just down the hall, with Barasky on duty. The man was a crude individual and likely chosen by Kaitlyn to act as a guard. The flip side was, he obeyed orders to the letter and Jesse could only hope that didn’t include assault. Addy might be armed but he couldn’t consider her chances.

The bolt grated and the key turned in the lock and he tensed. He didn’t truly believe he was destined for the firing squad, at least not yet, but there was always a wild card. Kennedy marched inside, a medical kit in his hand. Griffin nodded and shut the door behind him.

“I’ve come to check out your injuries. From the accident after your arrest. Apparently, you’re too dangerous to risk an escort to the infirmary, but I’m not important enough to worry about being put in a cell with you.”

“Funny guy.” He tugged at his handcuff. “Can you release this?”

“Pretty sure I can’t complete my examination unless I do.” The medic stuck his hand in his pocket and pulled out a sliver of metal. A couple of judicious pokes and the cuff fell away.

“Thanks. That sucked. I kept thinking of those women shackled in Bridges’ stockade, you know?” He knew Kennedy was onside, but it never hurt to fuel the flames. He stood and moved around the other man to wash up at the sink, wincing at his whiskers.

“I can imagine.” Kennedy opened his bag. “You hurt anywhere? Besides the busted mouth?”

“Kicked me in the back once they knocked me down. And no, no concussion. I wasn’t even stunned, didn’t lose consciousness, and I have no side effects so Addy and I aren’t a matched set.”

“Turn around. Pull up your shirt and lean over.” He pressed in a couple of places. “Some bruising. You pissing blood?”

“Not today.”

“Good. Looks like you’ll be fine pretty quick. How is Addy?”

“Better.” He remembered how she’d come apart under his hands and mouth. Probably not the best prescription for what ailed her but he couldn’t regret it. “Beside herself.”

“She has to hang tough. I don’t want to call it sedition, but there’s unrest out there. Griffin’s in with her now, taking her for another medical check. Filling her in. I understand you and her had a chat.”

He was relieved to hear that the gossip was spreading and people had an opinion. “Addy’s independent and doesn’t do well within the confines of military protocol.”

Kennedy snorted. “And being locked up will be taking its toll. At least she’s resting.”

“I’d like to see her again.”

“That’s up to Griffin. He has to juggle a lot of plates in the air right now. And Barasky. Well, you know him. Like talking to a brick wall.
